PRSI calls for Accreditation of PR professionals

Public Relations Society of India, Goa Chapter hosted a seminar during its concluding session of National Council Meeting held at GCCI Chamber, Panaji on March 17. Present during the session were speakers drawn from various parts of the country including the National President of PRSI Dr. Ajit PathaK, Senior Vice President of Zee and Essel group Ashish Kaul, Creative Designer from Synergy Vision Hyderabad Venkat Ramana and Vice president (South) of PRSI R.K. Dharan.

Nitin Kuncolienkar, Chairman of Goa Chapter of PRSI and Rajesh Parida Secretary unfolded strategies for strengthening the PR movement. The first Mass Communication Journal of PRSI was also released through the hands of Rajan Narayan, Editor of Goan Observer.

Addressing the members and other participants, Dr. Pathak, Chairman PRSI, briefed all regarding the efforts taken by PRSI in getting "accreditation" for Public Relations practitioners from the Centre on the lines of the highly developed countries in tune with the emerging economic environment. He said that they have presented their case before the PIB, New Delhi, which in turn has to seek approval of the Planning Commission of India. "The Union Ministries of information and Broadcasting and Human Resources Development have to clear the proposal," he added.

Kuncolienkar said that Goa needed substantial awareness on use of right to Information and PRS1 Goa chapter was ready to organize a national seminar on the "Right to Information Act" so that it helps empower the people from the grassroot level.

Participating in the interactive session on "Promoting Brand Image" earlier, Ashish Kaul called for "positioning the PR profession" which was at a "new low" these days. "We failed to position the profession as you are not trained for it, but driven by the marketing or the finance officer or the CEO of the company, giving no chance to image management we are meant for," he said. Change managers were needed to drive the PR professionals who are nothing but "glorified postmen for the media personnel." The colleges teaching PR also need professionals, he added.

Y. Venkata Ramana, creative engineer specialised in Industrial and Advertising photography had during his presentation on "Branding Images" asked the industry to build "quality visual banks of high resolution images to promote brand image in a big way." He regretted that the companies and corporates spend less than 5 per cent of its revenue on ordinary quality advertisements and not even 2 per cent on visual making as against the foreign companies which stress on quality visuals and ads for brand promotion.

Members drawn from Guwahati, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi Kolkata and Hyderabad along with PR professionals of prominent industries from Goa, PR Agency entrepreneurs and students attended the session.
